If you are a South Carolinian, this is your moment in the sun. The Republican primary is Saturday and the Democratic primary is one week later. It is amazing to think that in the past year, Sumter has seen President Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Thompson, Huckabee, and McCain all on the stump. Ron Paul won’t quit calling my house!
I’ve heard lots of conversations about town and in our hallways debating the qualifications of all candidates. It’s a good thing – people need to be engaged in the political process.
Some of you may be wondering if I will endorse anyone. The answer is no. You may see me at political rallies for candidates of both parties. My reason for being there is two-fold. I am a student of leadership – and there is no laboratory of leadership like a presidential campaign. I also vote. If I have the chance to hear a candidate in person, I’m going to take it.
Here’s why I don’t endorse people running for office. First, I do not want to put any barrier between a person and Jesus Christ. Second, I recognize that every candidate is flawed (“For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23 – the most fulfilled verse in Washington, D.C.). The error of the Zealots and Pharisees in the New Testament was in thinking a political leader would answer all their problems. People today make the same mistake. No politician can solve the problems of our nation or our world. Third, if you care at all about what I think, I want you to focus on what I know about Jesus and His church, not political affairs. I’ve seen far too many pastors waste energy in politics, instead of focusing on God’s work.
Having said that, I do believe we need a strong and effective leader for our country. We simply need to hold all things in perspective – leaders can lead in the right direction and with the right values, but God is still in control.
Any candidate who wants to worship at Alice Drive will be welcome to sing, pray and listen with the rest of us. No candidates will be invited to “say a few words,” or preach. No endorsements will be coming from the pulpit or from my blog. No church resources will be used for anything other than furthering the mission of ADBC: Helping as many people as possible take their next step toward Jesus.
I do want to encourage all of you to vote. Please take hold of this great liberty granted to us. Pray about your vote. Never think that election results limit the power or will of God. Pray for our elected leaders, whoever they may be. Don’t think that one party or the other is filled with God’s chosen people.
Never forget that history is filled with people who sacrificed time, money, and relationships for things that didn’t matter at all. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not from this world… Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice (John 18:36-37 passim).” Above all else, our job is to listen to Jesus and follow Him.
