Martin Luther King Day
What does Martin Luther King Day mean to God’s people?
First, it is a reminder that God can use one imperfect man to make a difference, to drive a movement, to right a wrong, to speak as a prophet for justice.
Second, MLK day reminds us to think about racial legacies that still taint this country, this state, and this church. We have made much progress. I remember segregated schools, whites only bathrooms and water fountains, and shivering images on a small black and white television of blacks marching and whites protesting. We have come a long way. Some of you bear witness that this church once declared itself to be for whites only - but we repented and reversed course and declared that this church would open to all.
But we have much further to go. As Christians, it should grate on our spiritual nerves whenever someone refers to “them.” There is no “them,” only “us.” What matters is a person’s need of Jesus and their acceptance of His grace.
This leads me to the last piece of MLK day - remember to pray for reconciliation - between races, yes, but also between broken human beings and God.
