The Girl on the Other Side of the Glass

My friend Robert Brown is here this week.  He’ll be preaching Sunday.  We have been talking to pastors and churches about plugging in and making a difference in Africa.

Last night, we went for a late bite at Chili’s.  After we had been there a minute, two young couples came and sat a booth next to us, separated only by glass.

One of the young ladies was dressed pretty provocatively.  The young man she was with couldn’t take his eyes off her, which I guess was the point.  She lit a cigarette and gulped her margarita, laughing, flirting, having for all the world what looked like a pretty good time.

Because of the glass we couldn’t hear a word of their conversation.  On our side of the glass, we were talking about AIDS, oprhans, widows, making a difference.  On her side of the glass - well, who knows?  I have a feeling those were not the topics of conversation.

It would be tempting to condemn the people on the other side of the glass.  It would be easy to feel justified in ourselves, and admonish them in our hearts because they weren’t talking about Jesus, or the poor, or church.  It would be tempting and easy… and wrong.

Which side of the glass was Jesus on last night?  Both.

Think about it.
